European Open Science Cloud (EOSC)

The European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) aims to create a trusted and interoperable European ecosystem for research data and services. Switzerland actively contributes to EOSC governance and the development of a Swiss EOSC Node.

European Open Science Cloud – EOSC

The European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) aims to create a trusted and interoperable European ecosystem for research data and services. It facilitates the sharing, access and reuse of publicly funded research outputs across borders and disciplines, thereby supporting Open Science, scientific excellence and innovation.

EOSC contributes to the development of the European Research Area (ERA) by promoting the free circulation of knowledge and enabling researchers to access and use research data and digital services across Europe. It also supports the implementation of the FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable) and strengthens collaboration between research communities, institutions and countries.

Switzerland and EOSC

Switzerland actively participates in the development of EOSC. SERI represents Switzerland in the EOSC Steering Board and contributes to European discussions on the future governance and implementation of EOSC. Swiss institutions are also actively involved in the EOSC Association, with ETH Zurich serving as Switzerland’s Mandated Organisation to the EOSC Association, which also coordinates the monthly Swiss EOSC Forum, bringing together stakeholders from across the Swiss research and innovation landscape to exchange information and discuss EOSC-related developments.

Switzerland has also been formally designated as an EOSC Candidate Node. Building on the ongoing Swiss EOSC Node Prototype (SENPro) project, the Candidate Node aims to strengthen interoperability between Swiss research data infrastructures and the EOSC Federation while preserving the decentralised nature of the Swiss research system.

Through its participation in EOSC, Switzerland aims to strengthen interoperability, facilitate access to research data and services, and ensure that Swiss researchers and institutions remain connected to the evolving European and global Open Science ecosystem.

White Paper on a Swiss EOSC Node Landscape

To support strategic discussions on Switzerland’s future engagement in EOSC and other international data-sharing initiatives, SERI has published a White Paper on a Swiss EOSC Node. Developed in close collaboration with key Swiss research stakeholders, the White Paper outlines a possible pathway towards an operational Swiss EOSC Node and highlights the governance, technical and coordination measures needed to strengthen interoperability, international collaboration and digital sovereignty.
