Access to official documents

Under the Freedom of Information Act (FoIA), every person has the right to submit a request for access to official documents without needing to demonstrate a special interest. This applies to documents created or received by a public authority after 1 July 2006, when the Freedom of Information Act came into force. Access to official documents may be restricted or denied in order to protect overriding public or private interests.

Access to official documents is generally free of charge. Fees are only charged in exceptional cases if a request for access requires particularly extensive processing (Art. 17 FoIA). Authorities generally decide within 20 days of receiving a request whether access will be granted.

To facilitate processing, please make your request as specific as possible. Clear details help identify the requested document and, for extensive requests, keep the number of documents manageable. When available, please include the document title, the subject area, the reference number and a specific time period or creation date.
