European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures – ESFRI

The European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI) seeks to ensure open and competitive access to world-class European research infrastructures. Switzerland supports this active networking with European partners.

The ESFRI helps to shape European research policy on research infrastructures. It supports multilateral cooperation between member countries, associated third countries and their research infrastructures. In this way, the ESFRI facilitates the efficient use of resources. An important part of this work is preparation of the European Roadmap for Research Infrastructures (ESFRI Roadmap). This greatly contributes to further development of the European Research Area (ERA). ESFRI support for research infrastructures is listed as a priority in the ERA Policy Agenda for 2025–2027.

For over 20 years, the ESFRI Roadmap has listed outstanding European research infrastructure projects, which are chosen on the basis of strict evaluation and selection procedures.

Switzerland and ESFRI

SERI represents Switzerland in ESFRI. SERI also encourages active networking with European partners. Swiss research institutes wishing to submit proposals for the inclusion of new research infrastructure (RI) projects or major upgrades of existing RIs in the ESFRI Roadmap can apply to SERI for political support. After review and validation, SERI decides whether to issue an Expression of (political) Support (EoS) for the respective project.
