Project funding in the space sector
SERI supports the development of innovative technologies, scientific instruments and applications in the space sector. Funding can take various forms, including direct grants for research projects, support for the development of new technologies, and the promotion of cooperation between universities and industry.
Development of space technologies and applications
ESA programmes offer numerous opportunities to develop cutting-edge space technologies and satellite-based applications. These developments are essential for advancing space exploration. Switzerland pursues a niche strategy in developing technology to achieve an international leading position in selected areas.
Details of the various ESA programmes, along with the relevant procedures and guidelines, can be found at:
Space instrumentation development (PRODEX)
ESA’s programme for the development of scientific experiments, PRODEX, enables Swiss participants to develop scientific instruments and experiments for space research. Approved projects are funded through the PRODEX Programme and benefit from the ESA’s experience and support. The instruments are developed in close collaboration with Swiss industry.
Details on Switzerland’s participation, along with the relevant procedures and guidelines, can be found here.
National space activities
SERI support for national space activities serves three main objectives: strengthening the position of researchers at Swiss universities and non-profit research institutions outside the higher education sector, advancing the implementation of Swiss space policy, and preparing Swiss stakeholders to participate successfully in the ESA and other international programmes.
Details on Switzerland’s participation, along with the relevant procedures and guidelines, can be found here.

Space Technology and Applications Development
ESA’s technology activities are implemented through several ESA preparatory programmes, either of thematic or horizontal nature. The main goal of the ESA technology programmes is to support technology development up to a Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 5/6. To achieve the required Technology Readiness Level (TRL), continuity is needed in technology programmes and between technology and user programmes.
PRODEX: Space instrumentation development
The Swiss space science community develops, supplies and operates world-class scientific instruments and subsystems for space missions. These development projects and scientific operations are carried out under the PRODEX Programme (Programme de Développement d'Expériences Scientifiques), which is run by the European Space Agency (ESA).
Support for national research activities in the space sector
Encouraging participation in space projects and programmes helps Swiss-based institutions connected to the ESA.
