Swiss professional qualifications abroad
There is no ‘international recognition’ or procedure that applies to all countries. Each country decides for itself how to regulate professional activities and what recognition procedures apply. It is therefore up to the host country to decide whether to recognise Swiss qualifications. Foreign recognition authorities often require a certificate from a competent authority in Switzerland.
What is a certificate?
A certificate for EU/EFTA authorities will be issued in accordance with EU directives.
Depending on a host country's requirements, the certificate may provide information on:
- the level of Swiss education (proof of vocational or professional qualification)
- the qualification holder's right to carry out the professional activity in Switzerland
- the amount of work experience in Switzerland
Where can I apply for a certificate?
Different authorities in Switzerland are responsible, depending on the type of certificate and qualification:
There are no legal obligations to provide certificates to third countries. However, if a foreign authority requires a certificate confirming state recognition or the level of Swiss education, a request can be made to SERI for such a certificate.
