Research infrastructures
With the advancement of multidisciplinary research projects and technologies, there is a growing need for high-performance research infrastructures in all scientific fields. The Swiss Confederation promotes Swiss participation in both national and international research infrastructures.
Swiss Participation in International Research Infrastructures
International research infrastructures provide major scientific and technological impetus, forming strategic pillars for scientific excellence, technological sovereignty and international cooperation. Most importantly, they provide access to essential research capabilities that would not be available at national level alone. For this reason, the Confederation ensures Switzerland’s full participation in the most important of these infrastructures. This allows Swiss research to excel while addressing global scientific challenges. Switzerland is a member of ten international research infrastructure organisations and eleven networks, investing approximately CHF 100 million annually to secure Swiss participation.
Swiss Roadmap for Research Infrastructures
The Swiss Roadmap for Research Infrastructures provides a comprehensive overview of the status and development of national and international research infrastructures. It is updated by SERI every four years and serves as the basis for the Federal Council Dispatch on the Promotion of Education, Research and Innovation (ERI Dispatch).
European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures – ESFRI
The European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI) seeks to ensure open and competitive access to world-class European research infrastructures. Switzerland supports this active networking with European partners.
