Strategic management of VPET system

Vocational and professional education and training (VPET) provides young people with a way into the world of work while training them to become the next generation of skilled workers and managers. VPET programmes, which belong to the upper-secondary and tertiary levels of the education system, maintain close ties to the labour market.

In Switzerland, the Confederation, cantons and professional organisations share responsibility for vocational and professional education and training (VPET). The three groups work in partnership to promote high-quality VPET and strive to offer a wide-ranging and suitable number of places on VPET and study programmes. An information campaign is helping to raise awareness of the VPET system’s strengths and the important role it plays for the economy and society.

The Vocational and Professional Education and Training Act and the Vocational and Professional Education and Training Ordinance set out the principles governing the VPET partnership and each partner’s areas of responsibility. This legislation provides a secure framework for the dual system of vocational education and training, and ensures a consistent education and training programme offering across Switzerland.

The Confederation, cantons and professional organisations also contribute to VPET funding. Responsibility for tertiary-level professional education and job-related continuing education and training lies primarily with companies and individuals, who also provide most of the necessary funding.

VPET is an important factor in the Swiss economy’s attractiveness for workers and enhances its international competitiveness. Research on VPET drives the system’s continual development and supports it in adapting to new challenges.
