The State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI) is the national contact point for the recognition of foreign qualifications in Switzerland and can answer general questions concerning the recognition of foreign qualifications. However, SERI does not act in a supervisory capacity. Any appeals relating to recognition of foreign qualifications are handled directly by the recognition body responsible for the given professional activity.
Qualifications that need to be recognised in order to carry out a professional activity in Switzerland or in an EU/EFTA member state are governed by Directive 2005/36/EC. SERI provides information and support to all citizens and to the contact points of other Member States on important issues relating to this Directive. Among other things, this includes information about competent authorities, national legislation on access to and pursuit of professional activities, social legislation, codes of conduct and ethical rules.
