In 2014, the Federal Department of Economic Affairs, Education and Research, in close cooperation with the cantons, the Swiss Conference of Rectors of Higher Education Institutions and the professional organisations launched the work-study Bachelor's degree programme as a temporary pilot project to combat the shortage of specialists in the sciences, technology, engineering and mathematics. The overall conclusion of the pilot study final evaluation is a positive one. However, since the pilot was run over a short period, the results should be interpreted with caution.
