Each year, the Swiss Confederation awards Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships for Foreign Scholars and Artists. The Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign Students (FCS) is responsible for selecting suitable candidates and awarding these Swiss government scholarships.
Remit
The FCS examines applications to obtain or extend research scholarships. In the case of art scholarships, it first consults the Federal Office of Culture before considering applications.
This task requires particularly specialised expertise that is not available within the Federal Administration. The FCS therefore performs its remit as an independent decentralised body of the Federal Administration. The selection process is governed by a Federal Act and corresponding Ordinances.
Members
The FCS is comprised of 16 members representing the interests of Swiss higher education institutions, the Swiss Conference of Rectors of Higher Education Institutions and students.
Structure
The FCS is administratively part of the Federal Department of Economic Affairs, Education and Research (EAER). The FCS Secretariat is managed by the State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI).
