The Swiss Roadmap for Research Infrastructures is a planning instrument for research infrastructures. The report is updated by SERI every four years in preparation for the ERI (Education, Research and Innovation) Dispatch. It gives an overview of future needs and likely developments in different areas of research. The 2019 Roadmap will therefore serve as a basis for the 2021–2024 ERI Dispatch.
National Research Infrastructures
The new national infrastructure projects included in the 2019 Roadmap were identified in a multi-stage process. Firstly, universities and the institutions of the ETH Domain proposed research infrastructure projects as part of a survey run by the ETH Board and swissuniversities. The Swiss National Science Foundation then evaluated the scientific value of the projects to determine which ones should be prioritised. Finally, the ETH Board and swissuniversities evaluated projects prioritised with regard to financing and implementation.
International research infrastructures
The Swiss National Science Foundation analysed the importance of Swiss participation in the infrastructures included in the European Roadmap (ESFRI), also with the aim of setting priorities for future Swiss investments.
On 17 April 2019, the Federal Council acknowledged the 2019 Roadmap for Research Infrastructures. The financial decisions of relevance to the Confederation were taken in the framework of the ERI Dispatch for 2021–2024.
Outlook
Work on the 2023 Roadmap started in April 2021. For further information see: Overview of national and international research infrastructures.
