swissnex are an important means of implementing the Confederation's policy of developing bilateral cooperation ties with selected partner countries in the areas of education, research and innovation.
swissnex Boston (Massachusetts/USA), opened in 2000, is Switzerland's oldest science consulate. Enjoying consulate status, swissnex Boston works closely with swissnex San Francisco and Switzerland’s scientific adviser in Washington D.C. It is mainly responsible for the eastern region of the United States and Canada (i.e. New England, Quebec and Ontario). Since 2013 swissnex Boston runs a New York outpost, active in promoting start-ups.
swissnex San Francisco is an extension of the General Consulate of Switzerland in San Francisco. Teams from several different Swiss institutions can all be found working there. swissnex San Francisco was opened in November 2003. It is responsible for the western region of the United States and Canada.
swissnex China opened in 2008, is located in the same building as the General Consulate of Switzerland in Shanghai.
swissnex India and the General Consulate of Switzerland in Bangalore are operational since 2010/11.
swissnex Brazil is located in Rio de Janeiro, under the same roof as the Consulate General, in the Casa Da Suiça, and has also an outpost office in Sao Paolo. swissnex Brazil was officially inaugurated in April 2014.
Each swissnex is responsible for establishing an extensive network of contacts at universities, research institutions and companies in the host region and making this network available to interested Swiss institutions and individuals. In order to draw greater attention to Switzerland as a location, swissnex organise scientific and cultural activities for specific invitees who may be interested in developing new bilateral cooperation programmes. swissnex China and swissnex India play a key role in implementing and guiding bilateral research cooperation programmes with both countries.
