Abstract
It is difficult to separate the very small tyre abrasion particles from road run-off in decentralised systems, so that a large proportion of tyre abrasion currently ends up in the environment. Changing the tyre formulation to minimise abrasion is difficult to implement due to the high safety requirements placed on tyres. A collection device on the vehicle also does not appear to be practicable. UMTEC's surprising discovery that tyre abrasion is at least partially magnetic opens up new possibilities for separating it from road wastewater. With our innovative approach of selectively separating the tyre abrasion with the help of magnetic separators, while the majority of the non-magnetic and unproblematic mineral material passes through the separators unhindered, efficient separation of the tyre abrasion can be achieved. With these additional separators, the drainage systems of tyre abrasion hotspots (intersections with traffic lights) in particular could be retrofitted in order to minimise the emission of ecotoxicologically relevant microparticles into the environment in decentralised systems.

Objectifs du projet
The objectives of this research project are the development of a measurement system for quantifying tire wear with an accuracy of ±15% and the design of a process for the selective retention of tire wear particles in wastewater. To validate the technology, a field trial will be conducted at a yet-to-be-determined, high-traffic intersection. The study will assess both the efficiency of particle retention and the long-term stability of the system. A particular focus is placed on economic feasibility to ensure a practical and cost-effective implementation.
